Terror of the object. Movements from the material to the immaterial: artifacts, things, fetishes, monuments, labyrinths, relics, statues, bones.

 

Following the exploration which led to the issue terror/terrorism, DETRITOS is now undertaking its research within the framework of the artistic residency programme GHOST, with the project “Terror of the Object”.
Taking Sandór Ferenczi as a starting point, for whom terror implies the inability to objectify, we ask: What is the relationship between terror and matter? What are the implications for thinking about the idea of object?
To achieve a constant movement between terror and matter we start from two notions of object: a mental one which doesn’t make itself visible; and a material one, an animated or bewitched one, a "savage object" that surpasses its objectification. Two different directions – one referring to the excess of the material object and the other referring to the traumatic inability to represent it – find, in the moment of terror, the point of coalescence between the material and the immaterial..

The research consisted in the organisation of a series of seminars/discussions with invited guest and resident authors and the development of an “archive-working-table" of objects of terror (images, texts, artifacts) in articulation with the outcome of the seminar series.

The exhibition of the documentation of the research and the 'archive-table' can be visited from 4th June - 12th June in Atelier Real.

“Terror of the Object” is a DETRITOS project developed in collaboration with three guest authors: Nuno Rodrigues, Vasco Costa and Bernardo Amaral.

With the participation of Miguel Oliveira, Carlos Farate, Miguel Carneiro, Maxime Benz, Miguel Graça, Jonathan Saldanha and Filipe Silva.

Commented tour of the “Terror of the Object” documentation research project, with the members of the residency.

Through a talk around the specificities of the objects exhibited, the tour of the research archive will address the way in which certain objects become the centre of discussion, attracting attention and comment while constantly resisting objectification – suggesting that the object is always in excess.
At the same time that a material specificity is recognized - imposing to discourse the necessity of negotiation - this specificity will be thought in relation to the idea of terror qua inegotiable relation with the object. Visit to the documents of the research "Terror of the Object" with Susana Caló, Godofredo Pereira, Nuno Rodrigues, Bernardo Amaral and Vasco Costa.

 

TALK " “On the functioning of the Editing Machine”"

Talk with the editors Godofredo Pereira and Susana Caló about editing as a speculative plan of composition.

"Only by accepting the possibility of coexistence of distinct and opposed (incompossible) proposals or real on the same plane - not under a normalizing plane - can the editing project become a productive (and divergent) public space. It i in that sense that it is possible to understand that the editing machine must avoid synthesis”.
